Don’t Worry — Final Fantasy VII Remake Is Done And Will Have No Further Delays

Over the past 24 hours or so, JRPG geeks from around the world have rejoiced as they finally got their grubby little hands on Final Fantasy VII Remake. This is a game that’s been in the works for several years and has featured a myriad of delays. Most recently, it was pushed from March 3 to April 10. That’s right. As much as we’ve been celebrating the demo of the game, we’ve also been lamenting the fact that the entire game should have been in our hands by now.

The video game industry is one predictable beast. As unpredictable as movies can be, video games seem to have that problem tenfold. Between the creation of game mechanics, countless hours needed to test them, and all the polish that needs to go into it, it’s very difficult to accurately schedule just how long it’ll take for a game to get made. As such, delays are pretty much inevitable for big triple-A games.

But, with that in mind, you can’t blame some fans for worrying that Final Fantasy VII Remake could face another delay. Luckily for us, that’s not the case.

“Yes, it’s all right now,” the game’s director Tetsuya Nomura told 4Gamer.  We needed a little more time for some of the last quality improvements, but it has already gone gold and there won’t be any further delays.”

So, what does “gone gold” mean? It means there’s a master disc of the “final” version of the game. I put final in quotes because, while gold used to mean the final version, the ability to add first-day patches has made it so that devs are still tweaking up until the day of release and beyond. While this is pure speculation on my part, I would be surprised if that wasn’t the case for this game. That being said, “going gold” does mean that there is little to no chance of any further delays.

Though while this is great, I’m many of us fans are wondering what in the heck we can expect for Final Fantasy VII Remake going forward. As was revealed years go, this will only be one chapter of an entire saga of games. Will we have to wait several years between each chapter going forward?

Hopefully, with the game mechanics ironed out, we could be looking at a yearly release, but I’m sure that’s just wishful thinking on my part. If this game is any indication, I expect there to be at least three parts total — but it’s not like they’re one-to-one remakes. Given that this new 100 GB game only features about one-third of the story of the original, you know they’re adding all sorts of love and details, and those take time.

But, we’ll have to wait and see. I guess I may as well enjoy Final Fantasy VII Remake before I start looking toward the next couple of chapters. If nothing else, it’s clear that Nomura is confident in the product that is this game.

“I am confident that the content will satisfy you,” Nomura continued. “Of course, as the story is up to Migar, it still continues as FFVII, but it has become a satisfying feeling of playing one by one. Once you touch it, you will definitely want to continue, so please look forward to it.”
