Is James Gunn’s Suicide Squad a sequel or not?
This is a question that has baffled fans for some time now. Back in 2016, Warner Bros. Pictures released Suicide Squad directed by David Ayer. While the trailers gave us all high hopes for a good film, what we got was a lot different. Since then the DCEU has been a mess and the only character we have seen from that film is Margot Robbie’s, Harley Quinn.
Then in early 2019 we got some hope for Amanda Waller’s team. James Gunn, who had been fired by Disney the previous summer, signed on to write and direct the next Task Force X film. This was very exciting news because of what he had accomplished at Marvel Studios with Guardians of the Galaxy.

Since then Gunn and Warner Bros. have done a great job at keeping the details of the film under wraps. The only thing we know for sure thanks to Gunn is the cast of the film. One question that keeps is, do you need to watch the first Suicide Squad to understand his film?
In a Q&A session on Instagram someone asked him this very question. Via ScreenRant we have the answer Gunn gave to that question. He simply responded, “No you don’t”. Suicide Squad has a returning Robbie as Harley, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Yet it seems that it’s going to somehow ignore the first film.

I am looking forward to Gunn’s take on the Suicide Squad. It will be interesting to see how he takes the characters that already belonged in a particular universe and gives them new life. For now like with everything else we are going to have to wait and see.
