As the years go by the acceptance of marijuana has slowly grown. It used to be that possession or use of the substance could get you plenty of jail time. In fact there are still people in prisons fighting cases that in this day and age may result in a warning at best. These rules were very harsh in the 70s. A time period where countries were deciding whether or not to legalize it (still waiting federally here).

In order to combat the idea of legalizing marijuana, the Canadian government decided to run an experiment on the effects of the substance on women. They were confined to a building for 98 days and had to smoke marijuana regularly. Then they were tasked to do certain jobs and were compared to a control group. Unfortunately, they weren’t getting the negative results that they were hoping for so after 98 days, the women were released and the whole experiment was buried. To this day, no one knows what happened to the data.

With that true story comes the film, The Marijuana Conspiracy from Samuel Goldwyn Films. This was inspired by the story of Doreen Brown. Who came forward during an interview with The Toronto Star back in 2013. She was one of the real-life women that the film is based upon.

Here is the synopsis for The Marijuana Conspiracy

In 1972, five young women looking for a fresh start in life become part of a radical experiment studying the effects of weed on women. Despite the agendas of the government, they use their unique strengths, and friendship to overcome adversity.
