Due To Demand BAD IDEA More Than Doubles Initial Distributors

Over the last few weeks we have been talking about the new comic book publisher Bad Idea. From the same minds that re-launched Valiant Entertainment back in 2012 comes this new out of the box way of thinking to distribute comic books. In their press release they had announced that only twenty comic book retailers would have the right to sell Bad Idea comic books, with more admitted on a rolling basis for an estimated fifty by the end of the first year. Bad Idea was at ComicsPRO Industry Conference in Portland, Oregon this past week and they made a couple of announcements including more information on their first new book, ENIAC #1 by Matt Kindt and Doug Braithwaite. Also some more information on how retailers can get be part of the launch.

During ComicsPro Bad Idea reported that due to the overwhelming response from comic shop retailers throughout North America and all around the world, they will be more than doubling the size of it’s first wave of participating retailers from 20 to 50. This will start with the book mentioned above, ENIAC #1 in May. Starting Friday, Bad Idea opened registration to every participating ComicsPRO member who first had the opportunity to enroll on-site to become what they are calling a Bad Idea Destination Store. All participating Bad Idea Destination Store retailer accounts were offered a 60% discount and free shipping on all orders.

In order to qualify to participate as a Bad Idea Destination Store, they must agree to a strict set of rules and criteria. Some of these include prominent in-store placement for the comic books, promotional displays as well as a strict “limit one per customers”, street date, pre-order, pricing and minimum/maximum order and allocation policies for all Bad Idea releases. Failure to comply with these rules, they will be removed from the program.

So what happens when the list of applicants exceeds fifty stores? Bad Idea announced that retailers may be assigned to the next available wave of admissions. In the meantime they claim they will be working overtime in order to service everyone of it’s retail partners as well as regularly admitting new stores to the program on a rolling basis. But does that mean retailers will be missing out on first issues? Absolutely not! Each time a new retailer is admitted they will have access to every prior Bad Idea release in very limited quantities. This way the stores can offer the stories from the beginning.

I think it’s fantastic that they feel like the demand is too great and thus make their program fit more retailers. This way I also have a better shot at having a store nearby to grab a copy of the book. What do you think about Bad Idea’s plan so far? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below!

Bad Idea kicks off with ENIAC #1 on May 6th, 2020 in select comic book shops.
