Dwayne Johnsons Says Black Adam Could Film In Next Year

This past weekend, Shazam! delighted a whole lot of people in theaters. Against all odds, it not only hit well with critics, but it managed to become the #1 film at the box office this past weekend, taking in more than enough money worldwide to cover its $90 million budget, along with at least most of its marketing costs (potentially even all of it). This seems to have cemented the DC Extended Universe as a big overall success for Warner Bros. After a rocky start, it now managed to have two consecutive hits.

But, as we know, this is just the beginning. The opening scenes of Shazam! also hinted at another being who once abused the power. We only caught a glimpse of him, but knowing fans knew this was Black Adam — an anti-hero Dwayne Johnson has been set to play for the past 2,000 years or so. So, what about that long-awaited Black Adam movie? In a new Instagram video, Johnson said:

“We should start shooting that in about a year.”

He then went on to discuss the difficult time they had developing the project. As you may remember, Black Adam was originally supposed to be a standalone project, but some time ago, it was confirmed that they’d instead have a Shazam! movie and a Black Adam movie, and that the Shazam! movie would be coming out first. It seems like the natural way to progress the universe, but at the time, it was a departure from the unique way Warner Bros. was planning on rolling out these movies.

Among the difficulties was that in trying to introduce both characters in movie, they had the task of making two simultaneous origin stories…a Herculean task for anyone. All in all, this seemed like a good move, but I’d be lying if I said I really cared for a Black Adam movie at this point. Based on what we saw in Shazam!, I’d much rather see him as the villain in a Shazam! sequel before spinning off into his own film.

That being said, they did right by the Shazam character, so maybe they know what they’re doing over at Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions. What do you think of Johnson’s comments? Let us know down below!
