Emma Thompson In Talks For Cruella

In case you all weren’t aware, Disney has been digging into their classic animated films and turning them into live-action adaptions.  This has been met with a mixed amount of emotions from fans.  Many want them to keep the magic in the animated films, as they do not feel that they transition well to the realistic interpretations.  Granted, some fare much better than others.

A few of the live-action adaptions include: Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, and more recent releases include Dumbo and the upcoming The Lion King, and Aladdin with others coming down the pipeline. Even though 101 Dalmatians has had the live-action treatment before, they will be revisited in the film Cruella which will focus more on the story’s primary villain (that image of her driving the car in the animated film used to haunt my dreams).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar winner Emma Thompson is currently in talks to be joining Emma Stone (Cruella De Vil) in the upcoming film.  Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) will be directing the film that is said to have an 80s punk vibe and will be considered an origin story for the villain.  Hmm, seems…interesting?  Not sure about how the 80s punk vibe will mesh with the character, but I guess time will tell.

Thompson is no stranger to the world of Disney as she starred in Saving Mr. Banks as P.L. Travers (author of Mary Poppins) and Mrs. Potts in the live-action version of Beauty and the Beast.

What do you think of the possible casting news?  Emma Thompson is an extremely talented actress, but will it be enough for you to check out Cruella?  Should Disney stop with all the live-action interpretations, or are there other Disney classics you would like to see as a live-action film?  Leave your thoughts in the usual spot, and thanks for reading!
