Eternals has already earned street cred, months before its release. Even though I don’t put a lot of stake in the Oscars, the director Chloe Zhao did win Best Director. So, Eternals has that going for it. Which is nice.
Variety released a spread on the recent Academy Award winner, mentioning her work on the Marvel film. In the article, Feige says Zhao “was really fighting for practical locations.” This may not seem like a big deal, but looking at most action scenes or alien locations in Marvel or DC. Nearly all involve everything from CG backdrop to an entirely CG location.
Feige recalled watching a sample reel of Eternals with Disney brass:
And I had to keep saying, ‘This is right out of a camera; there’s no VFX work to this at all!’ Because it was a beautiful sunset, with perfect waves and mist coming up from the shore on this giant cliffside — really impressive stuff.

Obviously the movie will contain loads of CGI elsewhere in what Feige describes as “a very bold and very ambitious, sprawling 7,000-year story of humanity and our place in the cosmos.” Still, it is nice to see when a director fights for as much practical locations, effects, yada, yada, yada. It certainly adds to the viewing experience, for me at least.
