Disclaimer: This post contains spoilers for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
At this point, we don’t really know what the future of the Fantastic Beasts franchise is. The most recent film, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, had a definite decrease in terms of its box office performance, and critics didn’t really have a lot of positive things to say about it either.
But for those fans who enjoyed what they had to see, there was one interesting twist they played near the end of the film. Queenie, the kind-hearted witch who admittedly went a little nutso by mind-controlling Jacob in between the first and second film, opted to turn over to Grindelwald’s side. To some, it may have felt like it came out of nowhere, but it is something I think was planted pretty well, and apparently, it’s something that was a part of the story from the beginning, as director David Yates told the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
We knew that was going to happen pretty much as we were finishing Film 1. Jo was very excited about that journey for Queenie. She showed that to us really early, even before we’d sort of drafted the script. That Queenie ultimately would be tempted over. Because she was the one character you would anticipate would not do that. And that was really fun to see that switch across. We were all aware of it and we gave Alison a heads up early that she was gonna have quite an interesting journey in the second film.

I personally think the move works in theory, but I’m not without my complaints. Grindelwald himself made it clear that he doesn’t really think much of humans. Sure he said he only thinks of muggles as having a “different value,” but there’s no way I would take that to mean that I, as a witch or wizard, would comfortably be able to marry a muggle. I wish they did a better job showing how Queenie saw Grindelwald has her way out.
But how did that reveal work for you? Do you think it was clear why Queenie crossed over, or did it come across as false to you? Let us know your thoughts down below!
