Check out the latest Barside Buzz on Fantastic Four, clues it’s set in 1963, rumored to film this Summer and Doom is not the main villain. Yesterday saw the official casting announcement for Fantastic Four and since then the rumor mill has been churning. We’ll start with the part that may be a deliberate clue. The movie has been rumored before to be set in the 1960’s and if you check out the image below there are some hints in the design that could suggest a 1960’s setting.

However, there’s an even bigger tease that may suggest the specific year is 1963. The magazine Ben is reading has been matched to an edition of Life from 1963. Check it out.
Perhaps not a complete smoking gun that a live-action photo would be. However, I seriously doubt that the care was taken to match an existing cover unintentionally. To me, this (which I missed yesterday) is the biggest tease the movie is set in 1963.
I honestly also think the suits being worn by Reed and Sue are really what the costumes will look like at the start of the movie, set in 1963. I’d be willing to bet that by the end of the movie the team are in current MCU timeline and have modern costumes. (I’ll also point out I pitched this exact idea when Disney first bought Fox on LRM. Therefore, it would be fair to say I’m a fan of this idea already.)
Film This Summer – Doom Not Main Villain
As for when Fantastic Four production will begin? Variety has heard it should start this Summer, and said so in their coverage of the cast announcement. We now know that Thunderbolts, which begins next month and Fantastic Four have swapped dates. Fantastic Four is now July and Thunderbolts will arrive in May. So Summer sounds about right even if Variety hadn’t covered this detail.
We also have some rumors, though not exactly brand new information. John Campea on his latest show says he’s heard that Doctor Doom will appear in the movie. However, that he will not be the main villain. Now, that’s a rumor I was already discussing with my friends yesterday when I posted the cast announcement to them. In fact that rumor has actually been fairly consistent even before recent rewrites to the movie.

It’s even been suggested Doom will be more of a tease, and could be the big bad of the MCU post-Kang/Secret Wars. However so far there’s not been a single rumor of who the main villain will be, unless it’s simply Galactus. It has been heavily rumored Galactus and a female Herald of his (may or may not be Surfer). In fact we’ve even got some casting rumors on here for those roles.
