Filmmaker John Singleton Has Died At The Age Of 51; Family Removes His Life Support After A Stroke-induced Coma

UPDATE: After being taken off of life support at his family’s request, legendary filmmaker John Singleton has died. He was 51.

Amidst reports circulating of his death, filmmaker John Singleton is still on life support, according to his publicist Shannon Barr. “John is still on life support,” says Barr in a statement.

After a report by Fox 4 Kansas City, stories were claiming that Singleton had been taken off life support and had passed away. The news quickly hit social media as fans of the director/producer tweeted their sympathy and condolences. TMZ then reported that the filmmaker is still on life support, but added that he is non-responsive and that “it does not look good.”

While that initial report may have been jumping the gun, it does, unfortunately, look like Singleton will ultimately be taken off life support.

“It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off life support today. This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors,” his family said in a statement.

Singleton is the creative mind behind some of the best films of the 1990s, including his  Oscar-nominated debut Boyz N The HoodPoetic Justice, and Higher Learning. The filmmaker went on to make films like 2 Fast 2 Furious and Four Brothers, as well as handling television with episodes of Billions and Snowfall. Just before Easter, Singleton’s family had issued a statement saying that the filmmaker had suffered a stroke and was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, asking for privacy during this time. He had fallen ill after a trip to Costa Rica.

Many of Singleton’s friends and peers in the industry, including director Spike Lee and rapper-turned-actor Snoop Dogg (who appeared in Singleton’s 2001 film Baby Boy), have sent their condolences and well-wishes to Singleton and his family.
