Filmmaker Michael Mann Set To Direct HBO Max Drama Series Tokyo Vice

Veteran filmmaker and producer Michael Mann is making his way back into the television director’s chair in the very near future. Mann will be directing the pilot episode for the upcoming HBO Max series Tokyo Vice. Mann will also be serving as executive producer for the series.

Based on Jake Adelstein’s non-fiction book, the series will star Ansel Elgort (The Goldfinch) as an American journalist who, looking to expose corruption, embeds himself within the Tokyo Vice police squad. As HBO Max states in its synopsis, “the series will chronicle Jake’s daily descent into the neon-soaked underbelly of Tokyo, where nothing, and no one, is truly what or who they seem.” The series will co-star Ken Watanabe (Batman Begins, Inception), and both Elgort and Watanabe will serve as executive producers with Mann.

Aside from his long film career—including hits like The Last Of The Mohicans, Heat, The Insider, Ali, and Collateral—Mann has had an extensive career in television, producing the likes of Miami Vice, Vega$, Crime Story, and Robbery Homicide. While Mann has seen his share of missteps in his career (his film adaptation of Miami Vice is a mix of excellence and not so much), there is no denying his cinematic vision nor the impact he’s made in both film and television. Having Mann behind the camera for the pilot is a definite plus to this upcoming series.

A production date has yet to be set for Tokyo Vice, which will air solely on HBO Max.
