Netflix’s The Witcher Showrunner Warns That This Is Not A Show For Kids

The Witcher from Netflix is surely almost here, whilst we don’t yet have an official launch date for the fantasy show, rumor and common sense would dictate it should be hitting within the next month some time. It may be that kids out there think with the gaming history, that this will be a show to get excited about. However, showrunner Lauren Hissrich has warned that this is most definitely not a show for kids.

Hissrich recently spoke with Italian website Corriere, though we got the translation from ComicBook.com, here is what she said about the violent and adult nature of this show.

“Very brutal…we are not shy about the adult themes present in the original material, the novels contemplate sexism, racism, and war with a lot of politics. Let’s say five-year-olds shouldn’t watch it.”

Very true, and yet the fact The Witcher games have been so popular means that there will be a great deal of children (not five-year-olds, probably though) who are very familiar with this material. It does seem to be a ‘thing’ in our society where violent and adult video games are seen by some parents as fine for their kids, probably because they have no idea what video games can truly be like. That is a very different situation from letting their kids watch live-action shows with extreme violence racism, sexism, and of course, probably a lot of sexual content. For a start, if we go by the books then one of the main threads revolves around an Emperor trying to get a hold of his daughter in order to marry her and father more children through her special Elvan blood. That’s hardly something to cozy up with the kids and watch on a Sunday night before school week starts.

Even if we take the games themselves (the show will be based on the books, not the games), as I’ve said, the thing most impressive about them for me was the adult nature of the story. I pleasantly recall being stuck for a whole day on a decision I had to make in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. There was a choice to make and neither choice would present a happy ending. I had to choose between people I had been helping or some orphan children I had met. Either save the children and then an evil force would wipe out the majority of the village, or allow some evil crones to eat the children (hinted at prior) and save the village. I literally had to stop playing and think over it for a full day before coming back and making my decision after work. Not only that, but there were several opportunities presented to become more powerful in the game at the expense of some morally dubious decisions, and normally in games I really don’t care too much, but I was so connected to the story I didn’t want MY version of Geralt to be killing sentient species for money.

All in all, an adult show in the vein of Game of Thrones is exactly what I want to see from Netflix’s version of The Witcher. I may still not be convinced that Henry Cavill is the best person to play Geralt, but I hope to be very wrong on that one when the show hits soon. It’ll probably be a binge watch for me when it does hit, are you excited by Netflix’s The Witcher, what do you think of Hissrich’s comments? Let us know in the usual spot.
