Filmmaker Rian Johnson May Not Be Done With Star Wars

Writer/director Rian Johnson may still have a future with the force. The current Oscar nominee made waves back in 2017 with his polarizing chapter in the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi. Receiving an onslaught of negative criticism regarding the story (as well as a large number of internet trolls attacking actress Kelly Marie Tran on social media), one would think the idea of returning to the series would be the last thing Johnson would consider.

However, it seems Johnson is still open to being involved with the franchise. In a recent interview with Variety, Johnson mentioned that he has not closed that door on his Star Wars experience. “I’m still talking to Lucasfilm but they haven’t announced anything on their slate yet,” he explained during his chat.

Johnson is currently enjoying the fruits of his most recent success, the murder-mystery Knives Out. Written and directed by Johnson, the star-studded whodunit raked in more than $250 million at the box office. Additionally, the film has earned Johnson an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The recent news is just an added bonus to the amounts of praise he has received for his latest project.

“I’m blown away, man. We just set out to make a fun movie that audiences could enjoy. We never imagined we’d be in a conversation like this.”

Johnson’s script will be going up against the likes of Marriage StoryOnce Upon A Time… In HollywoodParasite, and 1917 at the 92nd annual Academy Awards. The event will air live Sunday, February 9th on ABC.
