Since its creation in 2010, Skybound Entertainment (founded by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and producer David Alpert, respectively) has both gradually increased in comic content and expanded into different media avenues, including film projects with Universal and a first look deal with Amazon Studios. As recent as 2016, Skybound acquired Catherine Winder, the former LucasFilm Animation executive, to lead Skybound North. Now, the company has made another big acquisition for their lineup.
The Hollywood Reporter has reported that former editor-in-chief and chief creative officer of IDW Chris Ryall has joined Skybound Entertainment, a move focused on expanding their publishing line. Skybound’s Vice President and editor-in-chief Sean Mackiewicz will be working alongside Ryall.
Mankiewicz feels that Ryall’s, “impeccable track record as an editor reflects the quality of stories that we aim for with all Skybound projects. He is an ideal addition to our team as our comic book slate continues to grow.”
Under his watch, Ryall led IDW to became the fifth largest publisher in the North American comic book market. He also has a few writing credits to his name, including Transformers and Kiss & Rom. Ryall stated, “I’m excited to work with the team in place at Skybound and expand an already phenomenal library of content.”
Skybound contains an ever growing amount of comic book content that includes Birthright, Demonic, and Ghosted, along with Kirkman’s immensely popular The Walking Dead, Invincible, Outcast and his latest, Oblivion Song. As stated in his more recent stint on the podcast ID10T with a Chris Hardwick, Kirkman revealed that his Invincible comic will be adapted into a potential motion picture with Universal. The screenplay treatment is currently being written by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen, the creative duo that brought Preacher to life at AMC.
Many will be curious to see what Ryall can do to take Skybound even further than it already has…
