Frozen 2: Biggest Question The Directors Asked Themselves

Before Frozen first hit theaters back in 2012, there was no way of knowing just how big it would be. Yes, it was a Disney animated film in the style of the ‘90s Renaissance films, and yes it would feature two sisters at the forefront, as opposed to a typical love story, but still, who would have known how much of a life it would have taken on its own?

This would seem to indicate that a sequel would be coming. But, of course, you can’t make a sequel without a direction. Luckily, from the sound of it, directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck had some questions for the mythology they wanted to answer, as they revealed at a press day for the film earlier this month where LRM Online‘s James Burns was in attendance.

“We realized there were lingering questions within us,” Lee said in a presentation that followed a footage screening at Walt Disney Animation Studios. “We wondered what Anna would do now that she has everything she’s ever wanted. We felt there were unanswered questions about their parents and where their ship was going when it went down. And the biggest one: Why was Elsa born with magical powers?”

Of course, we now know this would be the main point of Frozen 2, which is a nice change a pace for Disney films. Very often, characters are just magical or they aren’t, and if they are, we just accept it without actually diving into the “why” of it all.

I think this goes a long way to prove how far animation has come in terms of mainstream credibility. It allows creators to address these kinds of questions and *gasp* actually have trailers that aren’t just a handful of one-off gags.

What do you think of Lee’s comments? Were these the kinds of questions you were asking yourselves in Frozen? Let us know down below!
