Lucy In The Sky: Natalie Portman On The Existential Crisis Of Her Character And The Meaning Of Life

If you go down a rabbit hole involving the world and its place in the universe, chances are you’ll come out of that hole deeply jaded — or you may not even come out at all. It sounds like this was the case with Lucy Cola, a fictional character inspired by the real-life astronaut Captain Lisa Nowack, who goes through a real struggle in director Noah Hawley’s Lucy in the Sky.

In the film, we see Portman’s Lucy in space, but when she comes back home, things aren’t exactly the same in the end. LRM Online’s Nancy Tapia had a chance to attend a press conference, and in that conference, star Natalie Portman discussed the internal struggler her character has in the movie.

“I think it was really about this existential crisis…of what happens when you have this experience that makes you feel more alive than ever and have more meaning than ever, but part of that experience is realizing how small we are and how meaningless, perhaps, everything we care about is in the universe. And this relationship she has with Jon [Hamm]’s character is very much about that where he’s kind of positing this ‘nothing really matters. Let’s just do whatever the hell we want,’ which is so tempting to go into. She’s sort of fighting for meaning. She’s fighting for, ‘It does matter. I do care. I am feeling something big. Even though all signs point to nothing matters. I want something to matter very badly.’ It’s kind of the most human thing that we can all relate to, even if none of us can actually claim to have been in space.”

That certainly helps paint the trailer for the film in a more understandable light, as it shows Lucy in her struggle to get back to space after experiencing it for the first time. While we may not all have the experience of going to space, I think we’ve all thought about our place in the world and the universe.
