Game Of Thrones: HBO Boss Doesn’t Foresee More Than One Spin-Off?

Whether or not you enjoyed the final season of HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones, there is no denying the rich world author George R.R. Martin created in his A Song of Ice and Fire novels, and it’s one worth exploring in future projects from HBO…but how many can we actually expect? From the get-go, we knew there was a handful of them in the works, but we couldn’t help but wonder how many we’d ultimately get.

But, for starters, let’s take a look at the one project they have almost ready to shoot this coming June. It’s been referred to by Martin himself as The Long Night, even though the network told him to stop, and it takes place thousands of years prior to Game of Thrones following the Golden Age of heroes. With them shooting the pilot soon, can we expect to see it premiere next year?

HBO programming president Casey Bloys didn’t seem to be in a rush to make it happen, as the boss told Deadline:

“I don’t know. I have to get a sense from production when we see scripts for a season, how big and involved it is. Shooting a pilot in June and having it on the air a year later feels a little rushed, but it’s too soon to tell.”

And what of the status of the other three offshoots that are in the works?

“Here is what I will tell you. I wanted to get through the final season and let that stand as a cultural moment. We have the pilot starting in June and then we will decide whether to want to do another one or not. I’m letting those things happen before we decide whether to do another one or not.”

Finally, the outlet asked Bloys whether or not we could expect more than one spin-off beyond the one set to hit production:

“I doubt it, I don’t think so. I certainly do not want to overdo it. We have so many varied shows coming up in 2019 and ’20 and even into ’21. I think Game of Thrones is a fantastic property but I don’t want to just be the home of prequels and sequels and all that stuff. I think you want to be really careful about how you do it. That’s why we’ve been working on the Jane pilot for a long time, because we want to do it right. I think the last thing fans would want is something that was rushed out just to make it to air.”

Translation? They don’t want Game of Thrones to be The Walking Dead of HBO. Given all the jokes surrounding people canceling the service immediately after the recent series finale, I can understand and respect that sentiment.
