Game of Thrones: Nikolaj Coster Waldau Talks about Jaime Lannister’s State Of Mind Going Into Season 8

It’s arguably the biggest show on TV and in 2019 Game of Thrones will air its 8th and final season on HBO. Unlike a lot of other shows Game of Thrones simply doesn’t reset its characters in between seasons, because unlike many other shows it was all designed as one continuing story.

I have often said that it’s a testament to how good Game of Thrones is, when in Season 7 people were panicking when they thought Jaime Lannister was going to die. After all, Jaime began the opening episode of the show, by getting caught having sex with his twin sister by a little boy and then proceeded to push said little boy out a high window.

Of course, as time passes and with excellent writing by author George RR Martin and the writers on the show, we learn the situation Jaime was in, was potentially going to cost him not only his life, but the lives of his sister/lover and three children as well. As the series has progressed Jaime Lannister played by (the frankly excellent) Nikolaj Coster Waldau has really grown on the fans. Now as Season 8 gets ever closer, just where is Jaime’s head at?

Nikolaj spoke with The Wrap and gave his own thoughts as to what is going through Jaime’s thoughts in the climax of Season 7 and leading into Season 8 of Game of Thrones.

“His whole life has been about, ‘How can I accommodate my sister? How can I navigate this world so I can be close to her, so I can protect her? And then the last couple of years, she’s been in constant danger. I mean, he’s tried his best, and he thought, I think, in Season 7 he finally had her complete trust and the fact that she revealed she’d made quite different plans when Theon Greyjoy (I think he means Euron Greyjoy guys!), that Qyburn is now her closest ally. I think it shocked him.”

“But also more the fact that it didn’t make sense. They have a future, potentially another shot at having a child, and she’s willing to risk everything for something to him that just doesn’t make sense. And on top of that, they just gave their word to the world, to everyone. And she just sees this crazy thing tried to kill her … And I think he sees her for a second the way the rest of the world sees her. And it shocked him and also the fact for a second she seemed as if she was ready to have the Mountain kill him — I think it broke his heart.”

This pretty much sums up exactly what my own thoughts are on Jaime’s state of mind going onto Season 8. The one question that intrigues me is, what is he going to say to Jon and Daenerys when he shows up in the North?

Jon – ‘Where are your armies Lannister?’
Jaime – ‘Yeah, it’s just me I’m afraid, my sister has betrayed you all, so I came to help…..yay me’

It’s certainly going to be fun to watch it all play out. I feel like I have waited too long for Season 8 of Game of Thrones already, can this year be over already? Winter is finally coming, sound off in the usual place below.
