Gary Oldman’s Commissioner Gordon from The Dark Knight trilogy is considered by many fans to be the definitive portrayal of the character. And this comes as no surprise since this iteration of the Batman story is probably the most widely accepted. The Oscar-nominated actor recently spoke with toofab at the 7th Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts International Awards and was asked who he would like to see take on the role of Batman:

“I would like to see someone like Joaquin Phoenix play it. This is no disrespect to Ben Affleck. I think it really depends on who is at the wheel that lifts it.”

Oldman’s Gordon is just about as good as it gets for the character, J.K. Simmons did fine in Justice League, but he just wasn’t involved in the story nearly as much as Oldman was in The Dark Knight Trilogy. This is probably not the first time Phoenix’s name has been thrown around as far as playing the Caped Crusader, and honestly the thought of him taking on the role doesn’t put me off. I would watch it.

Currently, Ben Affleck is still slated supposedly to play Batman in the upcoming film (though we’ll see), even though director Matt Reeves has met with other actors about the role, one of which was Jake Gyllenhaal, who is rumored to be the favorite.

Gary Oldman can currently be seen as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour.
