While both Marvel and DC have dominated television and the big screen for years, another comic book publisher has been gradually rising in popularity, Valiant Entertainment. Since their relaunch in 2012 they have done an excellent job at taking their classic characters and producing quality stories for each of them as well as exciting cross-overs. Alongside the directors of the very popular Super Power Beat Down series on YouTube, Valiant is set to release a web series called Ninjak Vs. The Valiant Universe sometime this year.

Alongside the YouTube series this week Valiant Entertainment is also releasing a four part mini-series comic book that will go hand in hand with the series written by Eliot Rahal and artwork by Joe Bennett. I really enjoyed the opening letter by Fred Pierce, Publisher for Valiant (see below), that sets up not only this book but also their great idea to “bridge the worlds of action and comics in a way that has never been attempted before”.
This first issue of the book gives us a clear image of why Colin King, Ninjak, is betraying MI-6 and the rest of the Valiant Universe. Roku, a deadly assassin and enemy of Ninjak, is able to exploit his greatest weakness that forces him to go up against his friends and allies. It is interesting to note that the letter from publisher makes it clear that this story is not part of continuity in the Valiant Universe. Apparently, there are events and deaths that are going to take place and with Valiant CEO & Chief Creative Officer has always said that “dead is dead” there is no coming back. So I am sure that there are going to be some surprise deaths that we won’t see coming.
One of the great features of both the comic and the web series is that it will be a great jumping on point for readers. It will feature some of Valiant’s amazing characters like Livewire, Archer and Armstrong, Eternal Warrior and Bloodshot. Each of these characters have their own titles some on-going and some completed that readers can check out and learn more about them, my recommendation will always be to start with Bloodshot.
Although we do not know the release date yet of the web series, this weeks release of the first issue of the comic book should give us indication that they web series is not far behind. The series will star Michael Rowe as Colin King aka Ninjak. You may remember him as Deadshot in CW’s Arrow. Power Ranger alumni Jason David Frank as Bloodshot, former WWE Superstar John Hennigan as the Eternal Warrior and the beautiful Chantelle Barry as Roku to name a few of the cast.
