George Lucas Changed The Ending Scenes Of Empire Strikes Back Shortly After Its Original Theatrical Release

The Empire Strikes Back. A film that most Star Wars fans hold in high regard, and thus wouldn’t think it ever needed any last-minute changes. It’s no secret franchise creator George Lucas likes to tinker. While many fans were first introduced to Lucas’ tinkerings with the special editions of the original trilogy, it turns out old Georgie boy was making changes way back in 1980, with Empire.

Even though the film had been released, Lucas felt it necessary to make some changes to the end of the film, where the characters are separated. With Lando and Chewie are cruising the Millennium Falcon, and Luke, Leia, and the droids on a medical ship, Lucas thought their locations weren’t clear enough. He then made a call to ILM and told the crew of the changes he wanted to make.

If you want details on the changes that were made, you can find them here.

While not all of the changes made to the original trilogy were bad,  enough of them were. Fans could only pray Lucas didn’t alter the films any further. However, some of the changes were actually did improve aspects of the films. Unfortunately, I can’t think of any examples at the moment, but trust me they do exist. As for the bad changes, a couple of common complaints come to mind. CGI Jabba the Hutt in  A New Hope and of course Greedo “shooting first.”

The Empire Strikes Back, celebrates its 40th anniversary today!
