Ghost in the Shell: Check Out This Extended Clip From The Film’s Opening!

Paramount has a bit of an uphill battle with a film like Ghost in the Shell. Even setting aside the whole whitewashing controversy, it has a bit going against it. Sure, the film is sort of a hard sci-fi that a specific audience will be up for checking out, but is it too dry and too serious for your average, everyday moviegoer? In addition, while anime has its place in the American subculture, it’s by no means a big draw to the theaters.

As a result, the filmmakers had a tough balance to hit with Ghost in the Shell. Could they remain faithful enough to the manga and anime to satisfy fans, all while drawing in mainstream moviegoers? That remains to be seen, as the film is still over a week away. However, the trailers they have thrown together have shown plenty of promise. However, in order to convince any final, lingering naysayers, the marketing team knew they may have to show a little bit more.

Now courtesy of the official Twitter account, we have our first look of the opening scene of the movie — the action set piece that we’ve seen in all the marketing thus far.

Check it out below:

It’s one thing to create a film that’s full of visual wonder and splendor — Michael Bay manages to do that in practically every film he does — but it’s the execution in the story that really matters, when all said and done. While we can’t yet comment on how Ghost in the Shell will accomplish this overall, we can say this opening shows promise. There are great visuals, yes, but there is some great tension strewn throughout the clip, and with the great edit/music/visuals combo, it really seems to capture the essence of a solid science fiction flick. Can it keep up this promising opening? We’ll have to wait and see.

Below is the synopsis for Ghost in the Shell:

“Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, Ghost in the Shell follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.”

Ghost in the Shell hits theaters on March 31, 2017!
