You thought it was odd when Steven Soderbergh shot an entire film on an iPhone 8? Well, what if someone instead shot an entire film — nay, a blockbuster — vertically. I’m talking about like holding your damn phone vertically, and having that be the way you have to watch an entire damn movie. I know, it’s been a dream of yours ever since vertical videos started popping up on YouTube. Luckily for you, that’s exactly what we’re getting. A vertical movie.
Producer Timur Bekmambetov, known for movies like Searching, Ben-Hur, and Wanted, is set to bring us an entire blockbuster film in a vertical video format. Well, “blockbuster” film. It actually has a budget of $10 million, but that’s fairly high considering what’s going on here. The film in question is called V2. Escape From Hell and it follows a captured Soviet pilot who “leads an escape from a German concentration camp by hijacking an aircraft.”

One version of the film will be Russian, and one will be an English-language version — and that version will actually have different scenes. Honestly, that’s a pretty cool and unique idea, even separate from the film’s vertical nature.
“Visually, the film is built around a person—this is a story about a man standing up and straightening his shoulders in spite of the circumstances. And about a rescue plane soaring up into the sky,” said Bekmambetov.
This film won’t be the first time he’s pioneered unconventional means of telling a story. He is one of the inventors of the Screenlife format, which tells a story through a tablet, computer or smartphone. It is probably most remember in the film Unfriended. He also worked on Hardcore Henry, which was a film set entirely in a first-person perspective.
So…what do you think? Are you excited to see an entire vertical movie? Let us know your thoughts down below!
