The oft mentioned in development Gotham PD show IS now Arkham Asylum show confirms The Batman director Matt Reeves. It was well known that The Batman was spawning spin-off shows on HBO Max. The first of these originally was the Gotham PD show based around the crime from the police point of view. We also know a Penguin spin-off focusing on that character and his rise to prominence is coming. It was then thought a third show was being developed based on the goings on inside Arkham Asylum.

However in a recent interview with The Cyber Nerds,  The Batman director Matt Reeves has confirmed that Arkham Asylum (not the title) actually evolved from the Gotham PD idea, and that they are one in the same.

“The GCDP thing, that story has story has kinda evolved. We’ve actually now [moved] more into the realm of exactly what would happen in the world of Arkham as it relates coming off of our movie, and some of the characters… almost leaning into the idea of… it’s like a horror movie or a haunted house that is Arkham. The idea, again the way that Gotham is a character in the movie, I really want Arkham to exist as a character. You go into this environment and encounter these characters in a way that feels really fresh. And so in our work on Gotham, that story started to evolve, and it started feeling [like], ‘Wait, we should really lean into this.’ And then that’s kinda where that’s gone.”

I cannot speak for all fans by any means. Personally, I much prefer the idea of a show focused on Arkham as opposed to the GCPD. Given there was a show called Gotham, albeit in a different Multiverse, I think Arkham is a fresher idea. Arkham also likely uses more of what makes Batman so great to begin with, the rogues gallery.

I have not had a chance to catch The Batman yet at theaters (insert sad face). However I hope to do so over the next couple of days. From what I am hearing though, the movie seems to be going down well with fans and is certainly pulling up some trees at the box office already.
