Guardians 3 And Holiday Special Timeline Update From Director James Gunn

The latest Barside Buzz is that Marvel are to make more one-off Specials like Werewolf by Night and GOTG Holiday Special.

Director James Gunn took to Twitter to answer some fan questions and gave a Guardians 3 and Holiday Special timeline update. Gunn clarified the Holiday Special will come out first and is planned for the next Holiday Season. We already knew that Guardians 3 was set for release in May ’23, but Gunn also clarifies the in-Universe timeline for us as well. The Holiday Special is set between Guardians 2 and Guardians 3.

In terms of the Holiday Special coming first chronologically that was always the best guess among fans. After all, Guardians 3 is supposed to be a finale of this Guardians team and that to me means potential deaths or retirements, etc. However I am surprised we are getting the Holiday Special this Holiday Season and not next. I figured there was a chance that the Holiday Special would act like a prequel. I am therefore hyped to be getting to see this project on screens this year.

Gunn has already given us a rough length for the Holiday Special when he spoke to Collider for the release of The Suicide Squad. The director at that point said it would be under 40 minutes in length. It is possible this will change during filming, so we’ll wait to see how big this Special will be.

I pretty much just really enjoy James Gunn as a writer and director. Therefore I imagine both Guardians 3 and the Guardians Holiday Special will be my kind of thing. I can’t wait to see both the Special, and the final movie of this team. The question is, what comes next, will Marvel create a new Guardians team? Will any of the characters stay around to fly solo?

Leave any comments below about this Guardians 3 and Holiday Special timeline update from James Gunn.
