Look, I’m not one to say I told you so, but I told you so. The Guardians 3 box office has had the best second week of any Marvel movie since Black Panther. Plus, the two week old movie has already surpassed the entire box office run of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Current word after this second weekend is a global total of $528 Million. Quantumania only managed to take $476M in its entire run.
Last week, before I saw Guardians 3 for myself I said we need to analyse this movie. What I meant by that was not the movie itself, but the reaction by fans, and how this would translate into BO figures. I theorized that the overwhelmingly positive word of mouth would help this movie where it hindered those prior. I can’t always go opening weekend and the poor reception to Multiverse of Madness and Quantumania had me decide to wait for streaming. I would not have done so with Guardians anyway, but the positive word of mouth certainly made me slightly more hyped to see it this past Friday.
Check out my theory in the related section below.

It makes sense logically, better received movies do better business. However that is not always the case when it comes to franchises as big as the MCU is. Yet, I truly believe the reason that box office has been down for Marvel lately is because they didn’t make very good movies. Even the TV series have not been all that well received lately, and that can reduce the hype as well. I think if the general consensus of Guardians 3 had been ‘another average boring movie from Marvel’, then we’d have seen the ‘usual’ second week Marvel drop off. Instead, as said above, the drop off into this second week was only 49%, the best since 2018’s Black Panther.
Guardians 3 was a very good movie and the trilogy as a whole works as a trilogy should. I’ll miss James Gunn at Marvel, but luckily I like DC characters as well, so looking forward to Superman: Legacy. Overall, I think the reports of superhero fatigue have been greatly exaggerated, you just need to make good movies Marvel.

Thoughts below as always.
