Guardians of the Galaxy 2: James Gunn Thinks Michael Rooker Deserves An Oscar, Plus The Franchise’s Future

Just pause for a moment and consider that right now, as of today, we’re on-track for a brand new Spider-Man movie, a full-on Justice League film just dropped a trailer, shooting is well-underway for Avengers: Infinity War, and by the end of the year, we’re going to get an awesome Thor and Hulk super team-up… and yet, the one movie everyone is the most excited about: James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which hits theaters on 5 May 2017.

Wow, what a year to be a fanboy, amirite?

There’s already a ton of press and media out there on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2; so today, let’s focus on what we don’t know. Sound good?

Last week we learned about the film’s expected runtime and we got a glimpse of a fantastic new IMAX poster. This week, in an interview Fandango recently conducted with James Gunn, we learn a few deeper insights about the film’s central themes and even pick up a couple hints about the franchise’s future.

Disclaimer: Fandango met with Gunn toward the end of Guardians 2‘s post-production, so it’s important to remember that things can (and often do) change during this late editing and effects phase.

Gunn relates that his favorite parts of the movie are those scenes that explore the characters’s backstories and emotions:

“My favorite part is the center emotional storylines. The stuff between Ego and Quill; between Nebula and Gamora; between Rocket and Yondu. These are all sort of new family relationships that have a lot of deep emotional aspects to them. Itís fun to make them play in this huge action-adventure film.”

Gunn also drops a few hints about new characters and changes to some of the existing cast. Speaking specifically about the new cast additions of Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone:

“This is definitely not a one-off [for them]. They’re both characters that weíve taken a lot of time to develop, and theyíre a big part of the MCU now.

I will say this about Michael Rooker, and this is no joke. He deserves an Academy Award nomination for this movie. He is amazing in the film, and heís blowing people away. Itís such a deep, honest and truthful performance from him.”

Gunn also reveals his thoughts regarding the state of the franchise — and whether or not he’ll be involved in the future:

“People are obsessed about the third one and they haven”t even seen the second one yet! What if they all hate the second one? Then they’re not going to be so obsessed anymore. It’s all about what’s in the future; it’s never about what we have right now. I think if anything, this Guardians is about what they are in this moment, and I think that’s what it’s been like for me working on the movie. It really isn’t about thinking down the road and how can we make something great someday, it’s how can we make something great right now in this moment that will affect people’s lives for the better. That’s what Vol. 2 is.

“Listen, we’re figuring it all out [regarding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3]. We’ll know soon. Let me take a couple of breaths before I say what I’m going to do next.”
