HBO Reclassifies Watchmen As A Limited Series — What Does This Mean?

HBO continues to add bits of drama to the future of its critically acclaimed success from 2019. The premium cable network has renamed its Watchmen series from series to “limited series.”

The move happened four days ago, adding to the statements showrunner Damon Lindelof has made about the series. From the start, Lindelof had stated that the Watchmen series would be a self-contained story with a beginning, middle and end, instead of an ongoing story told over seasons. Yet, the reclassification also allows HBO to create a different iteration; new stories based on the original source material.

HBO made this official statement regarding the reclassification:

“We discussed with the producers and felt limited series was the most accurate representation of the show and any possible future installments.”

For most of 2019, fans of the popular DC Comics graphic novel waited anxiously for HBO’s adaptation. As the first episode aired, shock waves rang through television sets. With every episode, HBO succeeded in paying homage to the original source material while creating its own complex, riveting story. Combining the comic’s giant squid attack with the factual and tragic events of the Tulsa massacre in 1921, along with a compelling backstory for a Minutemen member, made this Watchmen adaptation one of television’s finest masterpieces.

While this writer understands the desire from both the network and some fans for a second outing, Lindelof’s work deserves to stand on its own. The final product works as both a lesson on racial injustice and the standard in honoring an intellectual property while raising the bar in quality storytelling. A second outing, even one that is disconnected from this tale, runs the risk of tarnishing Lindelof’s work of art.

Therefore, leave it as a 9-episode limited series and enjoy this epic tale time and time again.
