Hellboy Creator On Why They’re Going Darker For the Reboot

After two well-received, yet underperforming films hit theaters and ran their course, he and star Ron Perlman always seemed to hold onto the hope that a third Hellboy film could indeed get made. Yet, in spite of his best efforts, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was unable to get that third movie made. Sure, some fans were looking forward to it, but it just wasn’t in the cards.

But don’t think Hollywood was ready to call it quits on the property altogether. Nope, not at all. Very soon after, director Neil Marshall hopped on board in what was pitched as a darker take on the character. After being in the lighter world of Guillermo del Toro, the studio opted to break things off cleanly. So audiences shouldn’t expect any form of continuation, but that wasn’t necessarily always going to be the plan.

“We went back and forth on that,” Hellboy creator Mignola told Deadline. “Early on there was some idea of continuing the storyline that del Toro had started but would that be fair to a new director? So we decided to just start over. Neil is a horror director so the idea then was to a make a darker film. If you are going to use a guy, let him do what he does best. So we went through the script taking out the del Toro-isms and in some ways go out of our way to make sure we are doing a different Hellboy with its own distinct character [as a project] but still adhering to the comics.”

In the comment, Mignola mentioned letting Marshall do his horror thing, and in a follow-up, he highlighted the differences when compared to what del Toro did.

“While del Toro did a more fanciful version of Hellboy, Neil has done a darker, more horror version of Hellboy. The both started with the source material but then they each have led it in very different directions.”

While many out there will lament the loss of del Toro on the project, the new vision, in conjunction with today’s tech, allows things to skew closer to the comics than ever before.

“This is the first time I have been able to say honestly that I was on set and looking at something that looked like it jumped straight out of the comic. I never had that experience on any of the other stuff. There’s one scene in this movie where I was like, ‘Holy f*ck,’ that’s pretty damn close — in the costumes and everything else — to a specific scene in the comics. That was a new experience.”
