A good deal of information from the DCEU has come our way recently. The Snyder Cut, The Batman updates, Michael Keaton possibly donning the cape and cowl again in Flashpoint are all on our minds. This information of course leads to more questions and rumors. One of the primary circulating rumors is that Henry Cavill would be reprising his role as the Man of Steel. Unfortunately, it looks like we need to pump the brakes as Cavill knocks out those Superman rumors.
Rumors Denied
While the rumor mill strongly suggests that Cavill is indeed coming back, he was quick to set things straight with Variety. On their Big Ticket podcast, the outlet spoke to Cavill about the rumors of his return to the cape. His response is not what many fans would hope:
“They get wilder and wilder by the day. The amount of speculation, the stuff I read on the Internet, is extraordinary and sometimes frustrating. It’s when you see people stating stuff as fact. Like, ‘No, that’s not the case. That hasn’t happened, and that conversation isn’t happening.’ But the important thing is that people are excited about it, and I think it’s important to be excited about a character like Superman.”
Alright, so it appears as if the rumors have no foundation whatsoever. Cavill even goes as far to say that even the conversation of him returning hasn’t taken place.
Still Interested
Now, Superman is a symbol of hope. Before we lose complete hope that Cavill will not return as the Man of Steel, he did in fact express his love for the character, yet again.
“Superman is a fantastic character. If people are chatting about it, and even if they’re making stuff up, it’s okay, because that means they want to see the character again. And in an ideal world, I would absolutely love to play the character again.”
Even though Cavill knocks out the Superman rumors, this statement could be promising. I’d like to think that I am not reading too much into things here, but the interest is definitely there since this is not the first time he recently expressed his desire to reprise the role. So what in the world is the DCEU waiting for? Even with Flashpoint coming they can still choose who stays and who goes. With the success of Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Shazam I can’t see them changing out those actors/actresses. Changing out Cavill would also be a mistake.
Keeping Cavill Is A Must
They tried the Superman route without using Cavill and his absence was definitely felt. At the end of Shazam, because his future was unclear at the time, they opted for the headless Superman. Sure, the idea was fun, but with Cavill begin Superman since 2013 it seemed anticlimactic to not actually have him in the scene.
The mention of Superman making cameos in Black Adam, The Batman and Flashpoint now seem to be invalid. This is the current situation though and if Cavill is willing to continue the role then I think the DCEU should jump on board. Face it, we can’t have the DCEU moving forward without Superman. Ben Affleck leaving and Robert Pattinson taking over as Batman is enough change for the moment, let’s continue with that works: that’s Henry Cavill as Superman.
