His Dark Materials Season 2 trailer hits!
His Dark Materials is a TV series that captivated me from the beginning. I mean…it was no surprise. I’m a huge fan of the novel series and author Philip Pullman as a whole. I’m such a huge fan that it took me months to finally admit that The Golden Compass wasn’t the adaptation I wanted. So, you could imagine my surprise when we got the His Dark Materials series from HBO and BBC and got…well, the show.
It was dark, it was tense, and while it was based on a kid’s book, I didn’t feel like it was talking down to us. Just as Philip Pullman treated his story as a serious subject matter, the series also followed suit. And it was glorious. While I don’t think the ratings have been gangbusters, I think they’ve done well enough for the networks to stay the course. Now, for the first time, we get to see The Subtle Knife, the second book in the trilogy, realized on the screen.
During this year’s San Diego Comic-Con @Home, HBO and BBC dropped the new trailer. And let me tell you, it delivers.
Fans of the books will recognize a lot. We get to see the city of Cittegazze, where spectres loom. However, from what I can tell, we don’t see any of these spectres just yet. We also get to see Lee Scoresby off on his own journey. Finally, we also get a glimpse of Mary Malone, a scientist who becomes an integral player in the third volume of this trilogy.
There’s a lot of flashes of greatness in this trailer, but if you didn’t really know what was coming already, I’m not sure this thing would tell you much. Perhaps that’s a good thing. Many fans complain about trailers giving away too much. That definitely won’t be the case here.
