His Dark Materials Trailer Reimagines Philip Pullman’s Fantastical World

In 2007, Hollywood gave the good ol’ college try in adapting author Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials for the big screen with the film The Golden Compass. It adapted the first film in the trilogy of the same name (published as Northern Lights in the U.K.), but sadly missed a lot of what made that book special — including the downer ending, which was chopped and pushed to the next film in the franchise…a film that never came.

Now, all these years later, we are getting a re-do in the form of a BBC adaptation, with the complete series hitting HBO later this year. In the new trailer, we get to see all the daemons that make up this world, as well as some of the big iconic locations such as Svalbard (and the daemon-severing guillotine) and moments such as the introduction of Iorek Byrnison.

Below is the official synopsis for His Dark Materials:

Adapting Philip Pullman’s award-winning trilogy of the same name, which is considered a modern masterpiece of imaginative fiction, the first season follows Lyra, a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world. Her search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children, and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. As she journeys through the worlds, including our own, Lyra meets Will, a determined and courageous boy. Together, they encounter extraordinary beings and dangerous secrets, with the fate of both the living — and the dead — in their hands.
