Hocus Pocus 2 Locks Down Hairspray And What Men Want Director — Not Sure How I Feel

Decades later, it finally looks like the long-awaited Hocus Pocus sequel. The cult Halloween hit has been praised by ‘90s kids for as long as anyone can remember, and with Disney+ now playing a major part in the House of Mouse’s strategy, we’ve been waiting to see this finally come to fruition. Now, it looks like Hocus Pocus 2 is right around the corner.

According to Variety, Adam Shankman has signed on to direct the comedy sequel. He is known for his work on Hairspray and more recently for What Men Want. As such, he has the experience to bring back the comedy that the original film brought to the table.

That being said, I am torn. I admittedly don’t like anything Shankman has worked on, and was hoping they’d pick someone whose films I…actually enjoyed. That being said, I know that, as much as I love Hocus Pocus, a lot of that comes down to pure nostalgia. I’m not sure how much is required for them to actually bring back a lot of the feel I enjoyed. At the end of the day, it’s not like it’s classic comedy here, and for all I know, Shankman would excel at delivering the campy elements that help make Hocus Pocus what it is.

But you know who we need to come back? The original Sanderson sisters. Originally played by Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker, they were the beating heart of that original movie. As it stands, Disney hopes to get all three of them to sign up so they can create a sequel, not a reboot. But, with none of them on board just yet, the studio sounds open to rebooting the franchise, which sucks.

So, in short, so long as they get someone competent, like Shankman, I think the most important thing Disney+ can focus their attention on is locking down that original cast. But what do you think? What are the elements of Hocus Pocus that need to be captured, and is Shankman the one who can make it happen?
