Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Script Originally Had Revealing Line About Palpatine, Ian McDiarmid Says

While I was glad to see good ol’ Papa Palpatine back in a galaxy far, far away, part of me also felt that it was kind of a Hail Mary. Had they brought him back from the beginning, or even at some point during the second film, the Emperor’s return would seem less forced. Yes, I know it’s been said that the plan for the trilogy was always to bring back Palpatine, I just find that difficult to believe. Recently, it was confirmed that the Emperor seen in The Rise of Skywalker is in act a clone. This of course set of many discussions, debates, and arguments among Star Wars fans.

Ian McDiarmid, who has portrayed Palpatine in several films, recently spoke at the London Comic-Con and revealed that at one point the script had a line where Palpatine confirmed he is a clone. You can check out what he had to say below.

“The cloning thing? Yes. Well, of course, there were all sorts of explanations for why I might return. But it’s interesting because at one point the script had line in that first scene with Adam who when he says ‘You’re a clone.’ and I said in that original script which is no longer with us ‘More than a clone. Less than a man.’ Which seemed to me to sum it up really.”

So wait a minute,  an individual’s force ability can be transferred into their clone? Alright I guess, I never knew that and still don’t see how it makes much sense. Also, they couldn’t find time to fit in an eight-word line, a really cool, and explanatory one? If you’re going to bring back a character as big and as iconic to the Star Wars franchise as Palpatine is, find better ways to implement them into the story. Palpatine babbled on for a bit and then, got his ass handed to him by Rey, rather easily, though that could have something to do with him being a clone.
