Well, things just got real interesting around here…

Before I proceed, beware: *POTENTIAL SPOILERS LIE AHEAD*

A new rumor making the rounds creates a lot of excitement surrounding three separate aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Up until now, DOCTOR STRANGE has sort of felt like its own thing. In the trailers thus far, and in the build-up to the project, DOCTOR STRANGE has seemed like it’s going to be a very different kind of animal. Everything about it has put the focus on Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character, and it has seemed like the film will explore its own new corner of the MCU. We know Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange will eventually fight alongside The Avengers in a later film, but this new rumor suggests that he may cross paths with a member of the legendary team in DOCTOR STRANGE!

The rumor is that Robert Downey Jr. will cameo in the film, as Tony Stark.

This gives us a few things to talk about:

  1. It means Doctor Strange will enter the fray right away, in terms of the looming INFINITY WAR
  2. Being that we know Downey Jr. is set to reprise Stark in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, which also takes place in New York City, it stands to reason that the scene will simultaneously welcome Strange into the fold while setting up what’s to come in Spidey’s next adventure
  3. It means that Downey Jr. really is all in when it comes to Marvel. For a while, during the period surrounding IRON MAN 3, it seemed like the most important star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was preparing to move away from the franchise. But if he’s showing up in DOCTOR STRANGE, it implies that Downey Jr.’s willing to keep his megawatt star power in the Marvel tent

Seemingly substantiating the rumors is the idea that there was some additional filming that was recently done for the film- which had wrapped principal photography back in April. Three days after the Tony Stark rumor hit the net (August 12), actor Benedict Wong- who plays Wong in DOCTOR STRANGE– revealed that he’d just wrapped, proving that additional content had just been filmed.

We can assume Downey Jr. is in full-on Stark mode these days because SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING is also presently in production. So getting him to shoot a post, or mid-credit sequence for DOCTOR STRANGE would be incredibly easy right about now.

Remember, as of now, this is merely a rumor coupled with speculation. Nothing has been confirmed, but we’re just having fun connecting the dots and figuring out where they may be heading.

What do you think? Is it cool that RDJ may pop up in DOCTOR STRANGE? Think it would link to SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING
