How Sony-Exclusive Spider-Man Will Work In Marvel’s Avengers

Wanna know how the Sony-exclusive Spider-Man will work in Marvel’s Avengers? Read on for more details.

Marvel’s Avengers is released this September and there appears to be a lot of interest in the game. Why not, when you consider how little Marvel games that have appeared since the MCU got so popular? However, the story that has dominated the game most recently was the Spider-Man exclusivity. If you have been living under a rock you might not know Spider-Man is an exclusive character for Sony’s PlayStation brands only.

The problem a lot of fans have wondered is, how you have an extra character in an online ever-evolving game? Especially when that game still has to work on all other platforms just as well, without Spider-Man. The folks at WCCFTech recently spoke with Marvel’s Avengers creative director Shaun Escayg and combat director Vince Napoli. Escayg explained how Spider-Man can work without affecting the game on other systems.

“Without obviously giving any spoilers, the window where you will see our version of Spider-Man will fit into our story. Again, I have to obviously dance around it because I can’t speak to it. But just know that this is our Spider-Man, he will be in our story and will fit in that world, sort of in that gap what happened A-Day and between then and now, even the villains that support that will kind of speak to how he belongs in this world and how long he lives in this world.”

So, maybe I’m reading this wrong, but here is my take. In order to make Spider-Man work for Sony only, his part of the game won’t be referenced hardly at all in other systems and he won’t be part of the main game’s story? Instead, it sounds like Spider-Man will have his own little mission, only playable on Sony’s systems. It doesn’t make me wonder just why Spider-Man wasn’t a playable character, to begin with?

The Price Of Spidey in the MCU?

There was some rumor around the Spider-Man appearing in the MCU deal. The unsubstantiated rumor stated as part of that agreement, Spider-Man was exclusive to Sony PlayStation for a period of time. I heard no concrete details about that, but I always figured it made sense. Spider-Man was never a part of the deal which saw Sony hold control of the Spider-Man franchise on film. Not even animated was a part of Sony’s original deal, and yet….everything currently out there on an animated front is Sony led for Spidey?

Here’s what Vince Napoli said of Sony asking them to make Spider-Man “The cherry on top”.

“Spider-Man is in addition to the arc and progression of the main story as well. There was no swapping or anything else in that line. We’ve got our plan, we’ve got our heroes that are coming out and the stories and the challenges and the gameplay escalation that we’ve planned out. That’s all continuing as planned. And then just on top of all that stuff, we’ve also got Spider-Man now and you know, he’s weaving into that, that is the key. There is no swapping or changing anything to kind of accommodate that. He’s got to fit within the massive plan and all of that stuff we’ve already got. It’s like, Sony went ‘Hey, can you add this on top of it, as a sort of a cherry on top of that?’ But he doesn’t affect or change that in any way. That plan is still moving forward as originally planned and conceived with all the original expansion stuff in mind.”

It certainly sounds like Spider-Man could only be used by Sony. It also sounds like Sony put their hand in their pockets to get Crystal Dynamics to take the time to make this separate Spider-Man story. That’s to be expected though, no one works for free.

Are you picking up Marvel’s Avengers? Does the Sony Spider-Man exclusivity make you more inclined to get it for PS4, or PS5? Are you happy with how Sony exclusive Spider-Man will work in Marvel’s Avengers? Share your thoughts below.
