After years and years of reboot discussions for the Matrix franchise, it now looks like the studio is moving forward with a full-on sequel. Interestingly enough, Keanu Reeves is back and so is Carrie-Anne Moss — two characters who died in the final film of the original trilogy. As such, we have no idea how this is all going to play out, but it does seem as though they’re getting the band back together, so to speak.
So, what about Hugo Weaving? He’s just as big a part of The Matrix as the other two. Over the course of a few movies, he became quite the imposing figure, and the way he says “Mr. Anderson” is unmistakable. Sadly, Weaving is not returning to the fold as Agent Smith.

“ It’s unfortunate but actually I had this offer [for The Visit] and then the offer came from The Matrix, so I knew it was happening but I didn’t have dates,” Weaving revealed to TimeOut. “I thought [I] could do both and it took eight weeks to work out that the dates would work – I held off on accepting [a role in The Visit during that time]. I was in touch with [director] Lana Wachowski, but in the end she decided that the dates weren’t going to work. So we’d sorted the dates and then she sort of changed her mind. They’re pushing on ahead without me.’
This is unfortunate, especially since it’s clear Wachowski had specific plans for the character. I’m interested to see where the story heads from here. Will they hire a new Agent Smith, or will they find a new A.I. to take on the role?
More than anything, I’m just excited to see what in the heck this story is supposed to be. Why are all these dead characters coming back? Let us know your big theories down below!
