Despite coming on the heels of five seasons of solid television that included two seasons of Daredevil, one season of Jessica Jones, and one season of Luke Cage, Iron Fist Season 1 wasn’t met by the same kind of critical acclaim. There were a lot of criticisms thrown its way, but one major one had to do with the fighting.
Unlike the others in the Marvel/Netflix series, Iron Fist was a martial arts master, and as such, we expected his skills to match. Sadly, the stars weren’t given much prep time, and when all said and done, there are numerous examples of fast cuts used to shield sloppy choreography. So adamant were they about fixing this problem, that Marvel TV brought in a stunt coordinator from Black Panther, but that wasn’t the only way they helped improve this, as showrunner Raven Metzner revealed to us at a roundtable at San Diego Comic-Con.
Metzner: I say we also evolve the action. So I think, and we brought this amazing stunt coordinator Clayton Barber and also all of our cast they really just went for it. They really pushed themselves. Finn really went to a place for months of lead time to really, really hone his skills and not just in fighting, but also in stunt work. And it was a really powerful experience so there is, I think the action has evolved. But it’s not just that but the character stories as well. We dug deeper into characters and deeper into relationships. I’m really proud of the dramatic side of the show as well. That’s the really fun thing about these shows on Netflix, is that, and also the Marvel Universe in general, there’s the action and there’s the super hero element, but there’s also really rich, grounded characters.

But this wasn’t the only way they helped to improve things. It looks like, in this season, there won’t be fight scenes just for the sake of fight scenes. According to star Finn Jones, there’s a real emotionality to them.
Jones: It’s like what you say before, every this, this season they all have a reason, they have an emotional standpoint driving the story. There’s no fights just for the sake of hey lets get these people together and fight. It’s all about driving the narrative and driving the characterization. Which for an actor I great, because not only are you doing these awesome fight scenes you’re also telling a story at the same time.
This is all sounding great to me! I hope the new season of TV lives up to it, because even though I enjoyed Iron Fist, I’m more than aware that the fight scenes weren’t its strong suit.
