Is Disney Not Completely Breaking Up With Netflix?

With Disney taking over the world, many of us have been worried about some of our favorite movies and shows leaving Netflix as many studios are jumping on the streaming bandwagon. It’s not only Disney breaking up with Netflix in the upcoming streaming wars, but we all know that the company has clearly been a main focus.

But Bloomberg released the news that Disney may not be completely breaking up with Netflix as many previously thought:

“But like Disney, the companies that own Netflix shows are bound by deals they made a long time ago, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing nonpublic information.”

It was originally believed that Netflix would be a way to replace dwindling DVD purchases, and many did not believe that Netflix would obtain the longevity that is has:

“Disney began licensing movies to Netflix in 2012, four years after the streaming service gained access to 2,500 movies through an arrangement with the Starz cable network. Hollywood studios saw Netflix as a lucrative way to replace shrinking DVD sales. Nickelodeon, Warner Bros., Fox and others all cashed in, handing Netflix some of their most popular programs. Many doubted the long-term viability of Netflix, so the agreements may not have seemed like much of a gamble.”

“And when the big Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar films return to Netflix in a few years, they’ll disappear from Disney’s own online service, according to the people.”

Disney is obviously not alone, as mentioned above. Other studios such as AT&T, NBC, and The CW may not be totally on their way out either…at least not yet.  Because so many companies have extended deals with Netflix, it will buy the streaming service more time in order to create more original material, which has been a large success recently.

“Just the same, Netflix has been producing more on its own. The company will release 1,000-plus pieces of original programming this year. By the time The Office deal ends, Netflix will have at least 3,000 new programs in its library and likely surpass 200 million subscribers worldwide.”

With that said, many of us The Office and Friends lovers are still somewhat worried about their eventual departure.  But, according to Bloomberg, we still have some time to savor our favorites.  Below is a breakdown of how much time Netflix has with some fan-favorites:

The Office: 2021

Friends: 2019

Grey’s Anatomy: 3+ years after leaving the air

Supernatural: 3+ years after leaving the air

The Flash: 3+ years after leaving the air

The Walking Dead: 3+ years after leaving the air

So, maybe we have a little bit more time than we thought, and it doesn’t necessarily mean it will be a complete breakup between Netflix and the other companies.  What do you think?  Does this ease some of your anxiety about having to either purchase another streaming service, or lose your favorite show, or is it merely delaying the inevitable?  If you had your choice, what show(s) would you like to see Netflix keep?  Leave your thoughts in the usual spot, and thanks for reading!
