With an overabundance of romantic comedies in the film industry, it can be tedious to find those stories that stand out or tweak the typical formula. A script that stands out and adds a fresh approach to the rom-com blueprint. One way to stand out is by featuring a script written by the film’s stand-up comedian and comedy actor stars.

Netflix’s latest original film Always Be My Maybe, starring Ali Wong and Randall Park, does just that. Based on a screenplay written by Wong, Park, and Michael Golamco (Grimm), Always Be My Maybe tells the tale of San Francisco natives Sasha (Wong) and Marcus (Park)—two best friends since grade school who went their separate ways after a spur of the moment sexual escapade in the backseat of Marcus’ car. Fast-forward sixteen years, Sasha is now a world-renowned chef fresh off a breakup with her fiancé (played by Lost and Hawaii 5-0 star Daniel Dae Kim) and opening a new restaurant in the Bay Area. Meanwhile, Marcus is still living at home with his dad. Fate, of course, places Sasha and Marcus back in each other’s lives as the two toggle between friendship and that one specific night.

Wong and Park are a delight together, playing off each other’s other quirky humor with ease. They play off each other so well, it’s hard to tell which lines are from the script and which are improved. While Wong has made a name for herself as a comedian, she reveals a charismatic screen presence that proves she can be a leading lady. Moreover, Park steps out of the typical oddball character actor roles he’s been in movies like Office Christmas Party and The Night Before, and delivers a funny yet heartfelt performance. Starring alongside Wong and Park is an eclectic crew featuring Kim, James Saito (Pearl Harbor, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Michelle Buteau (The Tick, Key & Peele), Karan Soni (Deadpool, Office Christmas Party), and Charlyne Yi (This Is 40, Knocked Up). Additionally, the cameo by Keanu Reeves is simply perfect, allowing the John Wick star to let loose.

If you’re looking for a light-hearted rom-com with an inclusive cast and fresh take, Always Be My Maybe is a funny, feel-good romp to sit back and enjoy.
