Is Thor: Love And Thunder Adopting Mandalorian Technology For Production?

Thor could take a page out of The Mandalorian production’s book.

Man, the technology behind The Mandalorian is beyond inspiring. We may have gotten used to the idea of green screen in modern filmmaking, but The Mandalorian really changed things. Now, it’s not all about green screen, but Stagecraft, or Volume technology, which projects real-time three-dimensional backgrounds behind the actors. So, not only do actors interact in real-looking sets, but filmmakers can achieve fantastical sets in-camera.

It was inevitable that the technology would bleed out into other projects. It opened up an enormous amount of potential for lower-budget TV or streaming series. No longer do projects need a feature film budget in order to be ambitious. On-set 3D environments could save lots of trips to specific locations. But that isn’t the only potential this Volume tech has going for it.

In the time of COVID, every studio is trying to find ways to be safe during production. One such way is to control all the variables on the set. It becomes much easier to control said variables in a stage environment, and especially easier when the crew can control specific aspects of the production remotely. Now, there is evidence that this tech could actually be used in Thor: Love and Thunder.

This rumor comes from MCU Cosmic, and let’s be clear, this isn’t a sure thing. This is mostly the outlet connecting dots based on specific details. One such detail has to do with specific people. The outlet states that some crew members with experience in the Volume tech are headed to Australia. With that in mind, they speculate that Thor: Love and Thunder could be adapting that Volume technology for their own purposes.

Honestly, it makes a lot of sense. There is a hell of a lot of potential that Volume brings to the table. It could help reduce the budgets of films. In an era where the future of blockbuster filmmaking is increasingly questionable, thanks to COVID constraints and theaters likely not being as profitable for the foreseeable future, I can understand the desire to save as much money as possible and produce things safely.

Also, the more productions experiment with the Mandalorian technology, the better and cheaper it’ll get, and that just opens up more and more possibilities.
