J.J. Abrams Says There Is More To The Story Of Rey’s Parents

Who is Rey?  A question that has made many a Star Wars Fan loose sleep at night for roughly the last seven years. In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the iconic lightsaber that has belonged only to members of the Skywalker family called out to her, and caused her to have visions. Many fans took this as a major hint that she was somehow related to the famous Force-wielding family.

Then came The Last Jedi, my many other issues with the film aside, one of the bigger non-reveals came when Kylo Ren told Rey her parents were nobodies, drunks who traded her off for booze. Even with this happening many fans just assumed Kylo was simply lying to her, and that may turn out to be true.

The Rise of Skywalker director J.J Abrams recently spoke with ABC News and gave hope to those fans hoping Rey has famous and familiar lineage. You can check out what Mr. Mystery Box had to say below.

“I will say that we knew, going into this, that this movie, it had to be a satisfying conclusion. And we were well aware that that’s one of the things that’s been out there. I don’t want to say that what happens in Episode 8 [didn’t happen]. We have honored that. But I will say that there’s more to the story than you’ve seen.”

I think J.J. is going to change Rey’s lineage in a way where it wouldn’t be classified as retconning. I also think this was the idea he had in mind all along. The hints to her being a Skywalker weren’t exactly subtle, in my opinion. Disney’s “pass the baton” format of trilogy making threw a huge wrench into the story Abrams had drawn viewers in with. I for one will always wonder what an all Abrams sequel trilogy would have looked like.
