Jaime Pressly, Andy Palmer and Dylan Friedman Talk Basketball and Family Drama in Last Shot | INTERVIEW

Dylan Friedman in Last Shot

Last Shot is a family sports drama about a young basketball player learning to live with loss. Directed by Andy Palmer and written by Todd Friedman, it opened in U.S. theaters the first weekend of October 2026. The PG-13 film runs 105 minutes and stars Jaime Pressly, Michael Rapaport, Johnny Simmons, Laraine Newman, newcomer Dylan Friedman, and two-time NBA All-Star Baron Davis.

Twelve-year-old Caden Issacs (Dylan Friedman) is a basketball prodigy whose world falls apart when his father, Darren (Michael Rapaport), dies suddenly. He moves to Nashville to live with his estranged mother, Lexi (Pressly), a driven music executive he barely knows.

And a spot on a new elite team brings its own pressure to Caden. Caden faces fierce rivals and the high expectations of the adults around him, including a coach played by Baron Davis. Through new friendships and the grind of competition, he learns to work through his pain and rediscover his love for the game.

The story is personal for its writer. Todd Friedman has said he drew on his own past as “the alcoholic dad in the stands,” and he is now sober. His son Dylan plays Caden, which makes the film’s father-and-son story feel especially close to home.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta spoke with actors Jaime Pressly, Dylan Friedman, and director-writer Andy Palmer for the family drama movie Last Shot.

Jaime Pressly had her breakout role as Joy Turner on NBC’s My Name Is Earl (2005–2009), which won her the 2007 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. She later played Jill Kendall on CBS’s Mom from 2014 to 2021, and her films include Not Another Teen Movie and I Love You, Man. On Last Shot she is also a producer, and she coached her young co-star off camera through the film’s hardest emotional scenes.

Director Andy Palmer made his name in genre films, directing the horror comedy The Funhouse Massacre (2015) and the horror film Camp Cold Brook (2018). He then directed The Re-Education of Molly Singer (2023), which also featured Pressly. Palmer has worked on every Hemlock Circle film in some role, and writer Todd Friedman chose him for Last Shot because he is good with kids and knows basketball. On set, he favored real shots over movie tricks.

Dylan Friedman plays Caden in his first leading film role. He has played basketball all his life, including on a club team, so the shots on screen are his own. He is the son of writer Todd Friedman, and he has said the title means getting a second chance “and you use it to its fullest ability.”

Last Shot is a sports movie first, with its heart in a family learning to start over. With real basketball, a personal script, and a strong veteran cast around a young lead, it gives families a story about grief, second chances, and taking your shot. It is now playing in select theaters.
