Appofeniacs is a horror thriller about deepfakes, written and directed by Chris Marrs Piliero. It opened exclusively in theaters on October 2, 2026, released by Magenta Light Studios.
The story starts small. Duke, played by Aaron Holliday, treats deepfakes as a harmless party trick and uses apps and AI to get petty revenge. The fakes spread, and what began as a joke sets off a bloody collision of scorned lovers, social outcasts, and criminals.
Piliero weaves several storylines together. Poppy (Simran Jehani) heads out for a cosplay weekend in the desert. Clinto Binto (Sean Gunn), a legendary maker of cosplay weapons and props, tries to protect his reputation. Lazzy (Paige Searcy) gets caught up in events she can’t control. The ensemble also includes Michael Abbott Jr., Jermaine Fowler, Will Brandt, and Harley Bronwyn.
The title plays on apophenia, the tendency to see meaningful links between unrelated things. That is the film’s real subject. The fakes matter less than how readily people believe them, and the horror comes from paranoia, confirmation bias, and baseless certainty.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta spoke with Sean Gunn about his role and AI deepfakes.
Sean Gunn breakout role came as the quirky Kirk Gleason on Gilmore Girls, which he played in 137 episodes from 2000 to 2007. He then became a fixture of his brother’s superhero films. In the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy he plays Kraglin and performs Rocket on set as the reference for the CGI raccoon.
In the DC universe, he played Weasel and Calendar Man in The Suicide Squad (2021) and returned as Weasel in Creature Commandos (2024). He plays the billionaire Maxwell Lord in Superman (2025) and the second season of Peacemaker. Appofeniacs gives him a standout part in a small independent film, far from the blockbusters.
Appofeniacs is now playing in select theaters.
