James Gunn Confirms He Was Offered A Superman Movie With DC But Chose The Suicide Squad Instead

the latest Superman: Legacy casting news. Some candidates have been revealed for the roles of Clark, Lex and Lois

Back after James Gunn was temporarily fired by Disney, he had a meeting with DC about making a movie for them. Since that point, we have known that Gunn would be making The Suicide Squad for DC/WB, although now he will also be going back to Marvel Studios afterward to finish off the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

At the time, before it was announced that Gunn was making The Suicide Squad, there was a rumor that Gunn was offered the chance to make a Superman movie, and now we know that is true. Gunn, as he does, was chatting with fans on Instagram, and whilst I didn’t catch the answer myself, the folks over at ComicBook.com did and here is what he said about Superman.

“As has been reported many times, DC offered me whatever film I wanted to do, including some sort of Superman movie (not specifically Man of Steel 2 as I’ve seen reported),” Gunn explained to a fan. “I chose The Suicide Squad because it’s one of my favorite properties in the world. It’s the story I wanted to tell more than any other.”

What I find most interesting here is the way Gunn talks about Superman not being Man of Steel 2. There have been many rumblings that DC/WB are done with Henry Cavill’s Superman and that the character will be rebooted if he is to appear in more movies going forward. Was the chance to reboot Superman what Gunn turned down? If so, I cannot blame him, that for me is a tricky movie to handle, and Suicide Squad being as bad as it was can surely only help to make sure Gunn’s version is far superior. Plus, it’s about having passion and clearly for Gunn that passion was for The Suicide Squad.

It does throw more fuel on to the fire that Cavill will never wear the red and blue costume again, which I do think is a shame. Cavill was, for me, born to play Superman, but the guy can only deliver the performances the script calls for and on that front, I think Cavill was done dirty by both BvS and Justice League especially.

As for Gunn, I look forward to seeing what he pulls off with The Suicide Squad. Guardians of the Galaxy was such a landmark MCU movie for me as it was brave, creative and tremendously fun throughout, let’s hope The Suicide Squad can kick start some decent DC movies as other than Joker, I haven’t been that impressed by any of them so far.
