In a recent local (Norway) interview James Gunn confirms they’re shooting Fortress of Solitude scenes for Superman in Svalbard. Yesterday we covered this as a rumor from Daniel RPK and suggested it may be true based on the image you can see above. That is the first official image we have from the now filming Superman.
However, since then a Norwegian outlet has published an interview with Gunn on location. In his interview with VG.no Gunn confirmed this is the exact reason they are shooting in Svalbard. Quotes below are via translator as published in the native tongue.
“We have filmed the first scenes, which are when Superman flees to the ice fortress. We wanted a place that was beautiful and felt like being in the middle of the Arctic, so we looked at several places in the world. But there were many things that sold Svalbard for us over the other places. First, there is the natural beauty. But also the fact that you’ll find a varied landscape here that you won’t find anywhere else. Nature gives a special feeling.”

Gunn also confirmed despite the remote location there have been some curious fans hoping to get a look. There are already one or two unofficial images online, but not worth looking for. There is also an image in the article linked above, but I warn you there’s nothing to see but some equipment lying around in the snow.
“We have had some who have been curious, yes, who have stood and watched,” he continued. “But that’s perfectly fine. And that’s a big difference. Because being interested in just watching is something completely different than when you have people trying to sneak into the set to take pictures that they can make money from by selling online.”
