Marvel and DC have been the major sides of the superhero coin since Marvel first began drawing readers into its famous 60’s era. However, up until the MCU when it came to movies, DC was far ahead. Back when Iron Man came out, the idea of a Marvel movie was met with a collective roll of the eyes from general audiences.
Then we have the fan base itself, some just like superhero comics and therefore both companies output. However, some have a furious brand loyalty to one or the other, and this a sort of fan rivalry has matured over the years. When it comes to the movie this fan rivalry has seeped into that side of the superhero business as well. Marvel movies are doing a hell of a lot better on average than DC movies right now, but this is only a small period of time across the history of comic book movies.
In our own comments section, we see this fierce rivalry play out when it comes to movie reviews and fan reactions to the current output. The question is though, is there actually any rivalry between the studios themselves?
Aside from David Ayer’s famous “F**k Marvel” comment a few years ago, they have had nothing but good things to say about one another. Though, I am pretty sure that some of the release date shenanigans before Justice League was due to Marvel flourishing its current power. There is one man who should know better than most about the rivalry between DC and Marvel Studios, and that’s James Gunn. The director has worked for Marvel and will do so again, but right now, he is working with DC making The Suicide Squad. Gunn was asked on Twitter by a fan to give his account of how this rivalry is seen from the inside, and Gunn gave his response as below.
Honest to God, I can't remember anyone at either Marvel or DC ever condemning the other company. I think there's probably slightly less competition between Marvel & DC than between Marvel or DC & all other movies. After all, we are in very similar boats, relatively speaking. https://t.co/dlmoSfDfsT

Whether this was the case a few years ago, when DC was first trying to get their DCEU off the ground is a different matter. However, right now, the current climate for DC seems pretty relaxed. Their output has not been well received recently, although the last few movies have come across better. Box office wise though, DC are way behind Marvel, in fact, DC’s resounding box office smash has been Joker, which is a complete departure from the normal superhero fare, and doesn’t even play the same sport as the content from the MCU.

I guess what I am saying is, that if the game was more on a level playing field, we might see some sparks fly between these behemoths. Right now though, I’m sure Marvel would be quite happy to see DC movies take an upturn, as long as it is not at the expense of their own output. DC on the other hand, just wants to make movies that turn a profit and are liked by fans. Maybe the time to revisit this would be in another decade’s time, when there is an actual rivalry to speak about?
