After many rumors pointing towards this, James Gunn IS directing Superman: Legacy the DC boss confirms. We have known for some time Gunn was writing this movie, expected to be the foundation of the new DCU. However Gunn had always said he was not sure if he would direct the movie or not. Lately rumors have pointed to the fact Gunn had decided to direct the movie. Probably to get ahead of those rumors Gunn now confirms the news himself on social media.
Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, “Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.” I hadn’t realized. pic.twitter.com/ohQNV8nI4g

Whilst we know very little about Superman: Legacy, Gunn did hint at a few details on what was quite an emotional outpouring from the exec/writer/director.
It has been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago – I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved.

So I chose to finally take on writing the script. But I was hesitant to direct, despite the constant pestering by Peter Safran and others to commit (sorry, Peter).

But, the long and the short of it is, I love this script, and I’m incredibly excited as we begin this journey. #UpUpandAway

Superman: Legacy will therefore release on July 11th 2025. The same date as Gunn’s late father’s birthday. Weirdly, also my father’s birthday as well. Okay, it’s not that weird really. I posted myself on this thread that I’m glad Gunn is directing and I can’t wait to see it. However I think a lot of fans will take some convincing. Much as I am a fan of Gunn, his current comic books movie back catalog are all very different from what you’d expect a Superman movie to be. For me though, that’s the challenge and I believe Gunn has the raw skills to pull that off. I also get the feeling that if Gunn hired another director that has a different vision, he may not be as happy with the overall product. Sometimes, you just have to do it yourself.

It’ll be interesting to see how Gunn has approached this movie given the fact he already turned down Superman for not having an idea at that time. As Gunn says above though, that began to change and here we are. We all know that Gunn was actually hired to write Superman: Legacy prior to his promotion to DC Studios co-head. Though as I’ve said in a previous article, writers get hired all the time to write scripts that never get made. There’s no guarantee the former heads of DC would have allowed Gunn to make the movie he will end up making. It’s also true that if Superman: Legacy fails to capture an audience then Gunn has no one to blame but himself. I’ll be there to see it, but I doubt the SynderFans will, as I’m worried they may try and assassinate James Gunn. Or, I would if there were more than 12 of them.
What do you think of the news James Gunn IS directing Superman: Legacy? As always, leave any thoughts below.
