James Wan Gives A Not-So-Great Update On The Mortal Kombat Reboot Film

Film adaptations of popular video game franchises have never really went over all that well. While the Super Mario Bros. film of the early 90s tops my list of the worst efforts, the Mortal Kombat films aren’t far behind.  Groundbreaking as a video game, the franchise was heartbreaking for fans once it hit the big screen. For quite a while now we’ve heard rumblings here and there about a reboot, with no real movement.

In-demand director James Wan, who’s upcoming film Aquaman, hopes to breathe new life into a stagnate DC universe, recently spoke at a press junket for the superhero film and took a moment to speak about Mortal Kombat. You can check out what he had to say below.

“That has been such a tricky one just trying to get the script to a point. People don’t know this, fans don’t understand this, but there’s just so much on the business side of things… to try and get the right budget for it, and we want to make sure we have enough resources and the budget to do the film right. If I can’t get the right resources and find the right filmmaker for it, I don’t want to do it, and I’m so busy already. I don’t need to clutter my plate with more stuff if I don’t believe it can be done right.”

A few years ago, fans were treated to two seasons of a well done YouTube series, Mortal Kombat: Legacy. This gave fans hope that it wouldn’t be long before a big screen adaptation would be heading their way. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. While Wan’s words aren’t the most encouraging, fans can take comfort that the project is still in the works, though we all may be waiting for a while.

Do you hope this project gets underway soon? Let us know in the comments down below!
