James Wan Unhappy That Aquaman Not Recognized By Academy For VFX

I wish I had more time this holiday season. I really want to see both Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns, yet I’ve just not had the chance for a theater visit. Aquaman has had fair to average reviews so far, but damn does it look pretty from the trailers. That’s the kind of visual effects that I want to see on the big screen. But it seems that not everyone was as impressed with Aquaman‘s VFX and James Wan isn’t happy about it.

As reported by ComicBook.com Aquaman visual effects supervisor Kelvin McIlwain took to Facebook to respond to a New Year post from director James Wan, here is what he said.

“Congrats James, It was such an honor to be a part of this creative endeavor and to work with you again. Cheers!!!!”

James Wan responded

“Kelvin, you and your department are the unsung heroes of this film. The fact that your VFX peers in the Academy aren’t recognizing or appreciating what we/you’ve all contributed to the film and cinema is a f**king disgrace.”

You know, I gotta say I kind of agree with Wan here. When I look at some of the nominees for the Academy Awards this year, I don’t see that many that can stand with what I’ve seen of Aquaman, the underwater effects are pretty unique after all. Here’s the list of nominees for best visual effects.

Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Christopher Robin, First Man, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Mary Poppins Returns, Ready Player One, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Welcome to Marwen.

Now there are some good candidates up there and even a few I can’t comment on as I haven’t seen them yet. However, I can already think of one or two of these I’d drop myself favor of Aquaman, even if I don’t end up liking the movie. I guess the Academy thought otherwise?

Have you seen Aquaman yet and do you think the VFX should have been nominated for an Academy Award?
